Economic & Environmental Savings of Wimba and Online Education
The University of Georgia's Cooperative Extension has been using Wimba Classroom to deliver training sessions in an online environment. This has allowed Extension personnel to overcome common constraints such as: limited travel budgets, rising fuel costs, and time spent away from county offices and local clientele. This archive discusses the:
1) Economic benefits in terms of travel dollars and travel time gained, as well as
2) Environmental impact of reducing statewide travel.

Providing Equal Access of Information to Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students in Online Courses
Dr. Sam Slike, a professor at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, discusses his use of Wimba to provide college courses to deaf and hard of hearing students. His innovative courses use a sign language interpreter broadcast through a web cam (and simultaneously broadcast via a Sorenson videophone); closed captioning of spoken lecture material via Caption Colorado; PowerPoint slides; text chat; and spoken lecture. His presentation will provide an overview of the deaf/hh population; general challenges encountered in providing equal access of information for this group of individuals; and creating an online course for deaf/hh and hearing students using Wimba as the delivery tool.

Report Out on a Longitudinal Study - Synchronous or Asynchronous Course Elements - Why Choose? Use Both!
Course management systems bring faculty many opportunities to enhance their teaching and learning while their workload sometimes tends to increase. Asynchronous tools are the features of choice, but, incorporating synchronous elements might bring about unanticipated responses, outcomes, and opportunities. This updated report-out will highlight several myths on synchronous course elements, share them, discuss them, and, ultimately, dispel them. Data gathered over the past four years, and insights that emerged from that data, highlights some strategies that can help in balancing quality and workload.

Student Collaboration via Live Classrooms: Extending Group Study beyond the Physical
A few years ago, the University of Maryland's Office of Information Technology was approached by the libraries with an offer of space to expand campus technology access in the libraries. As Chris Higgins's team started down this road they discovered a great need for group study and collaboration space. With limited physical space, they turned to technological tools to meet the need. The goal was to allow for group study to happen at a distance by the creation of virtual group study spaces. To do this at a distance they purchased Wimba Classroom. With multiplatform access and an easy connection into its learning management system, Wimba provided a way for students to share their desktops and collaboratively work on projects. The recent addition of video into the mix of capabilities has added a great deal to the experience for students. The virtual group study spaces are designed to be student run spaces for students. This stretches the limits of the software as it is designed. It also stretches the limits of our users’ concepts of such spaces deliverd in Blackboard. In this presentation, Higgins will share his team's experiences and lessons learned using this tool as a virtual group study space. He will have student feedback to share regarding the use of the virtual groups study rooms.

Managing Online Discussions Through A Participation Portfolio
If you want students to use online discussions, how do you avoid initiating every thread or simply counting all their replies (including their "I agree" posts)? By defining and rewarding substantive Q&A--and requiring students to submit an online "participation portfolio" of their best work--students will take responsibility for discussions and reduce your burden in assessing them.

Measuring the Effectiveness of Virtual School Programs – Research and Beyond
Based on a presentation that Pape gave at the BbWorld 2007 conference with Donna Vakili, Executive Director, Idaho Digital Learning Academy and Becky Nunally of Cobb County eSchool, this presentation will discuss the evolution of two virtual school program evaluation processes and the need for ongoing research on measures of effectiveness of online programs. Liz Pape, Virtual High School Global Consortium, and Matt Wicks, Illinois Virtual High School, will discuss how to measure the effectiveness of your online program, including what measures to use and when to measure. Learn about the necessity for a "common language" of program effectiveness and see examples of data-driven and self-reported indicators of effectiveness.

Effective Online Discussions
The heart and soul of many online courses is the discussion area. However, those new to online teaching are often skeptical about the use of discussions, asking questions like: “Will students overwhelm me?” or worse: “What if they don’t respond?” This session will explore how instructors can approach online discussions including considerations related to the purpose of discussions, tips on managing student (and instructor) expectations, techniques for assessment, and tips on how to stimulate discussion.
